“Data in Future Society” Foresight Study

Will data power aggregate even more in the hands of influential digital platforms, or will people become the masters of their data in the future society? How can we make data serve the economy, the state and society? What will Estonia’s data society look like in 2035? The Institute of Baltic Studies, together with our partner LevelLab, explored the topic in-depth, and now we can reveal exciting results. We present you with some of the possible scenarios for 2035:

• A paradise of digital platforms, where global tech giants drive the Estonian data economy and society.
• A data market where everyone can freely share and sell their data, as if on a marketplace.
• Social contract, where people come together to manage their data in data associations and society collectively sets ethical limits on data use.
• The state in charge, where the state takes decisive control of data and the data economy in the future society.
